The first cohort of Māori nurses and midwives gathered at Tūrangawaewae marae on Thursday 28 October to begin clinical leadership training offered by the national workforce development programme, Ngā Manukura ō Āpōpō.
Executive Director of Nursing with the Auckland DHB and Ngā Manukura ō Āpōpō Project Sponsor, Taima Campbell, says that the first cohort of twenty-two Māori nurses and midwives came from the top half of the North Island, including the Hawkes Bay, with 30 per cent of the cohort being Māori midwives.
“Participants came from nine District Health Board areas. Employment-wise cohort members were evenly spread between District Health Boards and primary care settings. This has resulted in a rewarding depth and diversity in this cohort which is really exciting,” she says.
The training is being delivered by Māori owned and led health consultancy, Digital Indigenous.com. Managing Director Tania Hodges says that feedback from the participants was extremely positive. “Of course such positive feedback can often be expected from events such as this, but our expectations were also exceeded,” she says. “We met a wonderful group of committed Māori clinicians who came with an open mind to learn, share and demonstrate leadership in action.”
Tania Hodges is clearly excited about the future of the clinical leadership programme presented by Ngā Manukura ō Āpōpō. “This first cohort has started the programme. They have rekindled and made new relationships as a group, welcomed information, ideas and knowledge that stretched them and contributed to enhancing their individual and collective leadership capability.”
Ngā Manukura ō Āpōpō offers Māori nurses and midwives the opportunity to participate in an emerging or advanced level of Māori clinical leadership training. This cohort is participating in the first of four Advanced Leader cohorts to be offered over the next four years. The 8-day Clinical Leadership training consists of four 2-day noho marae spread over a 4-month period. The sessions are designed to stimulate learning, discussion, debate and action.
The next Clinical Leadership training will be for Emerging Clinical Leaders who will also participate in the first of four 2-day noho marae spread over a 4-month period. Enrolments for the first Emerging Leaders cohort are open now, click here for more details.
